Ingredients for Our Steamed Garlic Prawns with Vermicelli Recipe

  • 12 large prawns, deveined
  • 2oz (50g) vermicelli
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 5 tbsp (45g) finely chopped garlic, or more if you love garlic!
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp chicken powder
  • 2 tbsp (15g) chopped green onion, for garnish

Step by Step Instructions for Our Steamed Garlic Prawns with Vermicelli Recipe

This showstopping dish is surprisingly easy to whip together for a special occasion. Here are the step by step instructions!

To prepare the vermicelli, soak it in warm water for about 20 minutes.

Distribute the vermicelli on a nice plate or glass dish, then set aside.

To prepare the prawns, wash and devein them, then starting from the head, start slicing the prawn in half, stopping halfway down the body, so that you can split the ends down in two to look like nice little wings, like so:

Place the prawns on top of the vermicelli, spreading them out and stacking them into two rows like in this photo:

Heat a wok to medium hot, then add your tsp of oil, along your chopped garlic, salt, and chicken powder. Stir fry for 30 seconds until fragrant, then pour the hot oil over your prawns.

NOTE: Some methods recommend showering your prawns with garlic after steaming, then pouring hot oil over top at the end, which is the method you see in the photos. After some tests though, we found the results MUCH better when the garlic was fried in oil first, then steamed with everything else, so that’s the method we’d recommend.

Place the prawns in a steamer, and steam for 7-8 minutes.

To serve, garnish with green onion…

… and enjoy!
